The Birth Of Aylmer

Aylmer was formed in 1817 when John Van Patter arrived in the area from New York State, having been given 80 hectares of land from the government of Upper Canada. During the 1830s, more settlers arrived, opening a general store and dividing the area into village lots.

Originally called Troy, it was renamed in honour of Lord Aylmer, the governor of British North America. The town grew in the 1851’s, with sawmills and flour mills running along Catfish Creek, and in 1860’s agriculture and timber production grew. A train from the Canada Air Line Railway helped it grow into a village in 1872, and a town in 1887.

One of the most notable residents of Aylmer is Skip Procop, the drummer of the Canadian classic rock group Lighthouse.

So What’s There These Days?

The old Royal Canadian Air Force training facility RCAF Station Aylmer closed down in 1961, and was converted to the Ontario Police College, a centralized provincial police academy. Graduates who are sworn in can serve as police officers across Ontario.

There is also a considerable Mennonite community in Aylmer, having migrated there from Mexico in the 1970’s. This German-speaking community originated in Saskatchewan and Manitoba during the first half of the 20th century, migrated to Mexico, and returned to Canada later on, settling in Aylmer.

Just east of Aylmer, there’s an Amish community as well. Having moved away from Ohio after a nuclear power plant was built near their original home, the Amish ended up in this community. If you’re looking for fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, and meat such as chicken and rabbit, this is a great community. This is an Old Order Amish community, which means they don’t use electricity, cars, and most modern tools.

Do they use plumbing? I don’t actually know! Some Amish communities do, and others don’t. I guess you’ll just have to visit and ask them themselves.
