History Of Ingersoll

Ingersoll Ontario is named for its founder, Thomas Ingersoll. An Englishman, Thomas Ingersoll moved to Massachusetts, before relocating to the Niagara region in 1795 in what was then known as Upper Canada. He received a grant from the Upper Canadian government to settle in what would later become the town of Ingersoll, building a farm and tilling the land.

After Thomas moved away, his two sons Charles and James returned to the family farm and began laying down the foundations for the town as we know it today.

The nearest major centre is Woodstock, Ontario, the capital of Oxford County.

One of the most significant people to ever have lived in Ingersoll is Laura Secord, who was actually the daughter of Thomas Ingersoll. Having moved to Queenstown near Niagara-On-The-Lake, she is best known for informing the British army of an impending American attack during the War of 1812, and for the chocolates.
