People And Places In Mount Brydges

The sleepy town of Mount Brydges is located just outside of London, west of the town of Delaware.

The town was named in honour of Charles John Brydges, an England-born businessman who became a high-ranking official in three different railway companies in what would eventually become Canada.

When Brydges worked for the Great Western Railroad, he was tasked with building a railway from London to Windsor, with relevant stops along the way. He built a station at the point where his new railway crossed the existing railway between Delaware and Strathroy, which just happened to be at the highest point of elevation in the area. They named the station in his honour, and the village that grew around it came to be known Mount Brydges.

History buffs will have loads to see in Mount Brydges.

John McCrae spent time in the area before joining the Canadian military during the First World War. A surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres, he is most famous for having written the poem “In Flanders Fields”, which he wrote just after his friend was killed in battle.

Just south of the town you’ll find Ska-Nah-Doht, the site of a prehistoric Iroquois village. Rebuilt based on the findings of local archaeologists, the site is a remarkable recreation of what the village may have looked like 1000 years ago. Along with the village, faithfully rebuilt to original specifications, you’ll also find a number of authentic artifacts from other nearby First Nations archaeological sites.
