Where Did St. Thomas Come From?

Like many other population centres in southwestern Ontario, St. Thomas got its start as a town that grew around the intersection of two railroads. The first settlers arrived here in 1810, led by Captain Daniel Rapelje, an American from New York City, and steady growth allowed it to be incorporated as a village in 1852, then as a town in 1861, and finally as a city in 1881.

The railway industry in the city continued to boom, with a total of 26 different railways passing through the city over the years, giving it the nickname The Railway City. Nowadays its economy focuses more on automotive manufacturing. It also serves as a bedroom community for London.

Interesting Things In St. Thomas

If you’re planning on visiting St. Thomas, there’s lots to see.

Jumbo, the famous circus elephant, died in St. Thomas in 1885 after being hit by a train. The town’s residents commissioned an, ahem, jumbo statue of Jumbo in the town’s square.

You can also enjoy automotive sports at the St. Thomas Raceway Park, located just outside the town near Sparta.

St. Thomas boasts a vibrant downtown with plenty of small businesses, which is active during the summer. You can also enjoy time in one of the city’s two major parks – Pinafore Park in the south, and Waterworks Park in the north.
