How To Get To Strathroy

Starting in London, head west on Oxford Street. Pass Westdel Bourne, and keep right when the road forks into Gideon Drive.

You’ll pass over the Thames River, after which the road will turn into County Road 14 and you’ll arrive in Kilworth.

Keep following County Road 14 through Komoka, then hop on the 402 heading northwest. Take exit 69, and follow County Road 39 westbound. This will take you right into Strathroy.

If you don’t like 400-series highway driving, here’s an alternate route. Take the same route as above up to Komoka. Instead of turning onto the 402, turn right on Amiens Road. Follow it up to County Road 39, and turn left. That will take you right into Strathroy.

History of Strathroy

In 1832, John Stewart Buchanan and Sir Michael Jacques arrived at the Sydenham river and opened a steel mill. The town of Strathroy grew around that mill, with a general store being built a few years later. Strathroy became a village in 1860, and in 1872 it became a town, which Buchanan named after his hometown in Northern Ireland.

One of the more amusing moments of the town’s history was in 1954 when the West Middlesex Memorial Arena was built. To open it, the Montreal Canadiens played an exhibition game in the arena against the Strathroy Rockets, the local Junior B team, and creamed them 14-3.

Notable People In Strathroy

For such a small town, Strathroy has had a number of significant people born there.

Sir Arthur Currie, a Canadian military officer who would eventually rise to be the leader of the Canadian forces in Europe during the First World War, was born in Strathroy in 1875.

William Bethune Lindsay, the chief engineer of the Canadian Corps during the First World War, was also born in Strathroy.

It has also been home to several hockey players, including Nathan Beaulieu, Brian Campbell, Darryl Edestrand, Andy McDonald, Pat and Mike Stapleton, and Warren Rychel.

The very first Canadian to ever win a gold medal at the olympics, George Orton, was born here. He won a gold medal for steeplechase in the 1900 Olympics in Paris.
