How To Get To Tillsonburg

If you’re starting in London, the easiest way to get to Tillsonburg is by heading south on Highbury Ave, then hop on the 401 heading east. Take exit 218 near Ingersoll, and head south along Highway 19. This road will take you through the tiny village of Mount Elgin, and straight into the heart of Tillsonburg.

If you don’t like driving on the 401, here’s an alternate route. Start by heading south on Highbury, same as above. Instead of going on the 401 though, keep going until you reach Highway 48, Ferguson Line. Turn left on there (heading east). Once you reach Pigram Road, turn right, then take an immediate left onto Highway 20, Brownsville Road. Turn right on Dereham Line, then left onto Hawkins Road. Hawkins Road will turn into Concession Road, and take you right into Tillsonburg.

History Of Tillsonburg

There are so many little towns dotting Ontario, and each has its own unique story. In Tillsonburg’s case, it was founded by George Tillson in 1825. A Massachusetts native, Tillson led a group of people from his home state to the region, founding a town called Dereham Forge. The town’s residents renamed it to Tillsonburg in 1836 after its founder.

Because it was a logging centre, the town built exceptionally wide roads to accommodate the logging shipments. This has been beneficial for 21st century traffic, as Tillsonburg’s streets now provide ample parking in angled lines along the side of the road.

A number of notable people have come from Tillsonburg, including NHL players Lloyd Andrews, Jeff Bes, Colin Campbell, Gregory Campbell, and Dave Moylan. Michael DeGroote, one of Canada’s few billionaires, worked in the tobacco fields in Tillsonburg as a teenager.

Attractions In Tillsonburg

Tillsonburg features a number of historic sites, including Annandale House, a national historic site. Built in 1883 by Edwin Tillson, George Tillson’s son and Tillsonburg’s first mayor, it is now a well-preserved example of the decorating style aestheticism popular at the time and inspired by English poet Oscar Wilde.

A historic train station was transformed into the Station Arts Centre, an arts facility which hosts a variety of arts-related events as well as the Tillsonburg Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings.
